Heaven's Vault (2019)

An archaeologist's interpretation of a few marks can change what she believes about a whole civilisation. You test translations, talk to a wonderfully dry robot companion and choose which historical threads to follow. That makes reading an active, fallible practice rather than a pause between adventures. The pace is measured and revisiting places matters; choose it if a novel's uncertain evidence and competing accounts are often your favourite part.
