Shenmue (1999)

Dobuita becomes familiar through shop opening hours, repeated conversations and the walk between home and the shopping street. The pace makes you learn where people are likely to be, giving a small part of Yokosuka a daily rhythm larger games often suggest only in passing. Choose the original Shenmue for patient neighbourhood observation; the official Shenmue I & II reissue offers another way to play it. Its waiting and older controls are central to that slower experience.
