Convenience store woman (2018)
Book

Keiko understands the rules of her convenience-store job much better than the expectations everyone places on her private life. Her matter-of-fact voice makes ordinary conversations feel strange and often very funny. This compact novel suits readers who enjoy people-watching and arguing about what counts as a normal life. In Ginny Tapley Takemori's translation, the prose is direct, although Keiko's perspective can be deliberately unsettling.
