A month in the country (1980)
Book

Restoring a medieval wall painting gives a damaged veteran a summer's work and the beginnings of connection. Carr makes practical concentration, a place and a few encounters feel enough to sustain a whole novel. Its brevity and quiet humour suit a return to reading without a rush, although the remembered summer carries loss as well as renewal.
