The Overdrive meter makes the best move depend on what the party has just been doing, not only on an enemy's weakness. Keeping it in a favourable range gives defending, swapping and using different skill types a tactical reason to exist. Visible enemies and direct transitions into battle also keep interruptions down. This is a strong starting point for someone who wants traditional party combat to ask fresh questions without an enormous build menu.
