Pairing two masteries is where I start inventing the next character before finishing the current one. Pets can hold the front while you reposition, or weapons and spells can turn you into the centre of the fight. These combinations develop during ordinary levelling. Skill refunds allow adjustments, but your mastery pairing is a commitment; expansions add choices rather than supplying all the interesting ones.
