A scavenging trip becomes a different sort of problem once you commit to the gateway home and the Zone's storm closes in. Your route, fuel and battered car all matter during that last drive. Getting back turns the collected materials into repairs and improvements for the next outing, giving escape a place in the regular loop. Choose this single-player option if nursing one unreliable vehicle through danger sounds more satisfying than defeating everything outside.
