Dwarf Fortress (2022)

An accident spreads through a fortress via jobs, supplies and the dwarves' responses, so the story is often the chain of decisions after the first thing goes wrong. Survivors can reorganise the settlement, and the wider generated world holds a history beyond any one outpost. A total collapse really can finish that fortress; continuing elsewhere in the same world is a new chapter, not a miraculous recovery of everyone who died. The graphical edition's tutorials make the first catastrophe easier to understand.
