Individual passengers can change trains, and journey time, fares and demand give the line a purpose beyond looking plausible. Automatic construction aids can handle basic double track and station signals, with detailed track and timetable control available when you want it. It is an Early Access sandbox without a campaign, so bring your own project and expect to learn substantial operating tools.
