Follow a belt back from an idle machine and the reason to redesign usually becomes visible: the next bottleneck is a concrete problem you can fix. Blueprints and construction robots eventually make repeating a successful layout much easier, after the early research and hand-building. World settings can remove enemies for uninterrupted optimisation. The base game is already a substantial systems project; the separate Space Age expansion is not required for this recommendation.
