The people travelling together have no clean moral claim to call themselves a family: their proposed adoption arrangement involves selling a baby. Koreeda makes the shared meals, small kindnesses and arguments matter without removing that troubling foundation. The emerging care is most affecting when it recognises somebody whom everyone else has reduced to a problem. Choose this Korean-language drama for complicated belonging, rather than reassurance that affection excuses exploitation.
