The activists arrive with donations; the mining community has to decide whether it can accept the people offering them. Hospitality, fundraising and standing beside one another turn an uneasy alliance into something that feels like kinship. The pleasure is watching reciprocal loyalty become a habit, with jokes and music helping people cross the room. This dramatisation of the 1984–85 alliance keeps political struggle and homophobia close to the warmth.

In 1984, a group of LGBT activists decide to raise money to support the National Union of Mineworkers during their lengthy strike. There is only one problem: the Union seems embarrassed to receive their support.
