Pokémon Red Version (1996)
Game
Released
Turn-based battles put the important choices into small menus, while distinct creature sprites make an encounter feel personal without detailed animation. Towns, routes and a team of six provide memorable structure to a long journey that can be resumed between stops. The original Red version belongs here, rather than FireRed. Menu work and random encounters can be slow, and trading with another compatible version is part of completing the original collection. Its portable clarity is stronger than its convenience by modern standards.
