Jane Eyre (1847)

Jane's insistence that her inner life matters gives this Gothic love story its enduring charge. School cruelty, paid work and an unsettling household test her independence as much as romance does. The pleasure is hearing a woman refuse to make gratitude or desire an excuse for surrendering her judgement.
