The Summer Book follows a girl and her grandmother through brief encounters during an island summer, rather than a large dramatic plot. Jansson gives arguments, weather and improvised games enough room to reveal affection without making it sentimental. These connected episodes accumulate into a complete world, where mortality is present even during the most ordinary conversation. Thomas Teal translates.
