Schachnovelle (1942)
Book
Published
Chess Story turns a shipboard chess encounter into a struggle over what mental concentration can protect, and what it can damage. Zweig builds the immediate tension of a contest around a history of Nazi confinement, allowing the game to carry far more than victory or defeat. The result is a tightly enclosed psychological story whose pressure exceeds its length. Also known as The Royal Game, it is translated by Joel Rotenberg.
