The Hour of the Star introduces Macabéa, a poor young woman in Rio, through a narrator who keeps interfering with the telling. The friction between her life and his self-importance turns a very short novel into an uncomfortable question about who gets represented and on whose terms. Read it for the argument inside the storytelling, rather than a smooth or reassuring character portrait. Benjamin Moser translates.
