The Sense of an Ending (2011)

Tony Webster has made his past into a reasonably comfortable story. An unexpected inheritance unsettles that account, drawing the reader into the difficult business of noticing what his narration leaves out. Its compactness makes reconsideration part of the pleasure: once new information arrives, earlier gestures and confident judgements begin to look different. Suicide and regret give the puzzle its emotional weight.
