Karyn Kusama, working from Diablo Cody's screenplay, makes the intimacy of a teenage friendship as unstable as the appetite threatening the school. The language is funny and performative, while humiliation and exploitation give the monster story its bite. This earlier choice suits viewers who enjoy horror that can sound flippant without making its characters' injuries trivial.
