Both players buy from the same kingdom of available cards, making the race about recognising the engine and knowing when to stop improving it and start scoring. Digital bookkeeping removes much of the physical handling, while asynchronous tables let the decisions fit around the day. The base set is free, with paid expansions optional; only the host needs those expansions for a shared game. Learn a small kingdom first, since unfamiliar card text can hide the significance of an opponent's purchase.
