Excellent Women (1952)

Mildred notices everything while other people assume she will provide tea, sympathy and practical assistance. Parish life and neighbours' entanglements offer a small, recognisable world, with dry humour about who gets taken for granted. The comfort is in her intelligence and the precision of the observation. There is loneliness beneath the comedy, rather than a promise that everyone will be paired off.
