Neverwhere (1996)

Helping an injured stranger takes Richard Mayhew out of ordinary London and into a dangerous city underneath it. The quest gives the strangeness a firm direction, while the distinct companions are easy to recognise when you return after an announcement. A lively choice for fantasy and urban adventure, with genuine cruelty behind its playful transformations of familiar places.
