The Day of the Jackal (1971)

Forsyth’s thriller follows an assassin preparing an attempt on Charles de Gaulle while investigators try to discover who he is. The parallel lines give the procedural detail a clear destination, making a long journey feel like time moving towards a deadline. Best when you can keep some attention for names and plans; the attraction is methodical suspense rather than constant action.
