Good Omens (1990)

Pratchett and Gaiman give an angel and a demon an inconvenient attachment to the world they are supposed to help finish. Apocalyptic grandeur keeps running into ordinary English preferences, while digressions and footnotes add their own comic rhythm. Read the novel for that mischievous narration as much as the characters; religious irreverence is central to the joke.
