Cold Comfort Farm (1932)

Flora Poste meets a family who treat gloom as an inherited obligation and approaches them as a practical problem. Gibbons makes the parody funny through overripe descriptions and a heroine unwilling to respect them. It helps to enjoy melodrama being punctured, though you need not know the particular rural novels behind every joke. The humour is sharp rather than universally affectionate.
