We Have Always Lived in the Castle (1962)

Merricat's account of her household has such firm private rules that it is worth spending time inside them before accepting anybody else's explanation. The short novel offers a distinctive voice and increasingly uncomfortable domestic atmosphere. Choose it for Gothic unease, family hostility and the pressure of a watching community. Violence and a history of poisoning are part of the premise.
