Ape Escape (1999)

Catching a monkey becomes a little investigation into what it notices, where it can escape and which gadget will help you approach it. The controls make that pursuit feel unusually physical, with one stick moving you and the other operating equipment. It rewards learning those gadgets rather than simply following a path. The original requires a DualShock controller, so its early 3D camera and unfamiliar button layout deserve a patient introduction. Modern PS4 and PS5 reissues offer another way to play.
