Snow makes the frontier look inhospitable before anyone reaches for a gun. Sergio Corbucci's Italian-French western pits a mute defender against bounty hunters whose violence has official permission. The severe contrast between law and justice is the attraction, with a cruelty that makes this a demanding choice after the more playful European entries.
