The partnership between two bounty hunters keeps changing according to what each understands about the other. Lee Van Cleef's watchful stillness gives Clint Eastwood somebody formidable to play against. This European co-production turns a straightforward pursuit into a contest over professional method and private motivation, without requiring the first film as homework.
