Jigarthanda DoubleX (2023)

A gangster's ambition to become a film star turns the making of a western-inflected action movie into part of the drama. Karthik Subbaraj's Tamil production lets spectacle and self-invention develop into questions about whose lives cinema can make visible. This is a sprawling genre hybrid with tonal leaps, rather than a straightforward period gunfighter story.
