The Last Guardian (2016)

Trico's whines, rumbles and answering calls turn an enormous creature into a companion whose mood you try to understand. The boy's calls are small by comparison, and their echoes keep reminding you of the scale of the ruins around them. Sound designer Derrick Espino has described using recordings of family dogs, a useful clue to the domestic familiarity inside the fantastic creature. Movement and commands can be awkward, but the audible relationship is worth the patience.
