The Sense of an Ending (2011)

Retired Tony Webster is comfortable with the version of his youth he has kept. An unexpected inheritance puts pressure on that confidence. The final effect is less a tidy correction than an unease about how memory protects the person doing the remembering. Suicide and painful family history are central to this compact novel.
