A small turn of Trico's head can feel like a decision, while a stretch or a careful step makes the enormous creature seem aware of its own body. The boy answers with cupped hands, scrambling movements and gentle touches. Animation director Masanobu Tanaka has described combining authored and procedural movement to make that physical relationship work. This is the choice for patient observation and growing affection, although persuading Trico to follow a command can also be frustrating.
