Grandia II (2000)

A visible action timeline lets you delay an enemy with a well-timed critical attack, giving turn-based combat a pleasing sense of intervention. Ryudo's party also supplies a warmer, stranger journey than its mercenary opening suggests. The 2000 Dreamcast game later reached other systems; Grandia II HD Remaster on PC, or Grandia HD Collection on console, is a workable modern route based on that heritage. Expect old-fashioned dungeon corridors and elaborate attack animations, rather than mistaking the remaster for a newly paced RPG.
