The Portuguese-language Brazilian film gives an aspiring photographer a way of observing a violent social world without making him its most powerful figure. Energetic editing helps the large cast remain legible. The crime hook is immediate, but children, coercion and graphic violence make this an intense entry point rather than a casual first watch.
