Amélie (2001)

French is the main language of this Paris-set fantasy of small interventions and hesitant intimacy. Its clear visual jokes and recurring routines make it an inviting first subtitled film. Audrey Tautou's watchfulness gives the stylised city a human centre; choose it for playfulness rather than a neutral picture of everyday Paris.
