Mae's old friends have jobs, worries and limits of their own. Choosing who to spend an afternoon with opens up different conversations and outings, making friendship a question of attention rather than courtship. Gregg and Bea need more than cheerful agreement; the warmth comes partly from allowing a shared history to be awkward.
