Erasure (2001)
Book
Published
Monk writes an exaggerated novel to mock the narrow expectations placed on Black authors, then has to live with its success. His family life gives the satire emotional stakes that complicate the pleasure of being right about an industry. Read it alongside Yellowface for a lively comparison of voice, audience and the cost of turning a person into a marketable category. The book-within-a-book is deliberately abrasive.
