Thomas combines factory shifts with the work of defending his community against a government threat to its land and identity. Erdrich gives political resistance the texture of ordinary obligations, money worries and relationships. Hope rests in people organising while their lives continue to make demands on them. The novel’s humour does not cancel its accounts of exploitation, missing family and violence.
