Middle sister's sentences circle rumours, qualifications and the things nobody can safely say. Their repetitions are both comic and claustrophobic, turning a young woman's account of coercion into the sound of a whole community policing itself. This is ideal if an unusual rhythm can carry you through digression. It is demanding rather than brisk, and the harassment and political violence should not be mistaken for a merely quirky verbal performance.
