True Grit (1968)
Book

Mattie Ross recounts the pursuit of her father's killer with a certainty that can make even a complaint sound like a legal submission. Her formal turns of phrase and dry assessments give this western its comic precision. Try the prose without putting on a borrowed film accent: the timing is already in the sentences. The adventure includes violence, but the particular pleasure is Mattie's refusal to be patronised.
