Stevens has a polished professional phrase for almost everything, especially the things he would rather not admit. A butler's account of his service and country drive becomes compelling through qualifications, corrections and conspicuous restraint. Read a paragraph aloud and listen for where the confidence starts working too hard. The voice asks for patient attention to implication, with regret and compromised loyalty underneath its good manners.
