The Good Soldier (1915)

John Dowell tells a story of two marriages as if chronology keeps slipping out of his hands. Revisions, delayed information and apparently innocent remarks make the voice more interesting than a neat sequence of events. Choose it if you enjoy hearing someone give themselves away while trying to explain other people. The title does not promise a combat novel: its battleground is intimate knowledge, betrayal and the limits of a very assured account.
