Northanger Abbey (1818)

Catherine Morland's taste for Gothic fiction encourages some spectacularly misplaced expectations. You do not need to have read the novels Austen teases: the gap between Catherine's imagination and ordinary social behaviour supplies the comedy. Bath friendships and an invitation to a grand house give the story a clear path. A welcoming choice if the word manners makes you expect a book without mischief.
