Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (1865)

Alice's encounters are short, argumentative and full of rules that stop making sense as soon as she tries to use them. The verbal comedy works before you have identified the parodies behind it. Read the original text, with John Tenniel's pictures if you want its familiar visual companion, and follow Alice's practical attempts to cope. Notes can be a second pleasure rather than an entrance requirement.
