Metamorphosis (1915)

A man wakes transformed and starts worrying about work. That collision between an impossible event and practical anxiety is an immediate way into Kafka, without a preliminary course in his ideas. Look for Susan Bernofsky's translation, which keeps the comedy and human distress close together. The novella is short and disturbing; follow the family's changing responses before trying to decode the transformation.
