Jane Eyre (1847)
Book

Jane's insistence that her inward life matters gives the long story a voice to follow from childhood onwards. School, work and an unsettling household keep placing recognisable demands on her independence. There is ornate language and a substantial time commitment, but the first-person urgency provides direction. Its treatment of empire and race also deserves attention alongside the romance.
