The Gold Rush (1925)

A hostile landscape turns eating, shelter and polite behaviour into unstable physical routines. Chaplin lets the same objects carry hunger and an almost absurd social ambition. Seek the original silent version if you want the 1925 construction; the 1942 reissue adds narration and changes the presentation rather than simply improving the sound.
