The Trees (2021)

Brutal murders in Mississippi become the opening to a larger, stranger reckoning with lynching. Everett's brisk exchanges and grotesque comedy give the investigation speed without making the historical violence harmless. It moves between crime, satire and horror, so read it for escalation rather than the comfort of a conventional procedural solution.
