A Portrait of the Artist As a Young Man (1939)
Book

The language grows with Stephen Dedalus, so the childlike opening and the later arguments belong to the same developing consciousness. Follow the changes in what he can hear, fear and question. Joyce gives the experiment a recognisable growing-up story shaped by family, religion and the wish to become an artist. This is a fuller commitment than the shortest choices here, with intense religious and sexual guilt.
